Insane? I guess that's one word you could use to describe me. I intentionally keep myself crazy busy and still love to be social. So I end up doing something almost all the time. Take this coming up Monday for instance. This quarter I signed up for 3 intramurals here at UAF (Soccer, Broomball, and Basketball (for who knows what reason...)) and they all start on Monday. This means Monday night my evening goes:
Wind Symphony: 4:20-5:40
Calc III: 5:50 - 6:50
Dinner: 7-8
Basketball: 9-10
Soccer: 11-11:45
Broomball: 12 a.m. - 12:30 a.m.
Yeah. That is a busy night. But look on the bright side! I get to do team sports, stay in shape, stay social, and still end up with about 8 hours of sleep. And I do love team sports, especially the ones that I do with my friends. ESPECIALLY soccer and broomball. I've played soccer forever basically and I play the position of Sweeper because it is the adrenaline rush of quick sprints, full field awareness, constant command of the field, and the "last man standing" feeling. I love having that kind of responsibility, leadership, and ability to be a wall for my goalie. Plus soccer is one of those sports that is about 20 times as fun to play as it is to watch on television. And on defense, especially as last man standing, you can get away with.... stuff in the backfield when chances seem slim. It's quite entertaining :D But all legal! Because there is totally a difference between just hitting someone and hitting someone with enough finesse to make it look like a defensive stop. The second one is much more satisfying.
I guess that also influences my love of broomball as well. Playing hockey was a fun bout for me back in my early high school and middle school days, but after moving to Valdez it was impossible. There was no hockey there. Now that I'm here at UAF I'm playing broomball! Its if hockey and soccer had a sport baby. Its played on your feet, but in an ice rink. Instead of a hockey stick, its a funny shaped, almost lacrosse shaped, stick with a rubber end on it. Instead of a puck, its a semi-deflated size 1 soccer ball. Plus, for this sport I have taken on the role as goalie. We may not have the best team in terms of skill, but I'm quite sure that we have the best team name (This Plus 5 Bananas) and the most fun. And goalie is very fun! I can't really run on the ice like everyone else (I've spent way too long within the crease....) but quick reflexes seem to keep me alive and the ball out of our net. The intensity of those quick responses when someone is crashing down on the net is a feeling unlike most others.
I'm sure one day I may settle down and become a little bit more relaxed with my time, but for now this isn't such a bad way to spend a semester at college. GAME DAY IS TOMORROW!
A summary of my thoughts on life in this fun filled college experience here at UAF.

Those who surround you are a part of you
Have you ever really sat down and thought to yourself what your friends mean to you? A lot of times people tend to mix up the words "acquaintance" and "friend" and it kind of bugs me. A friend is someone that you actively talk to, have a certain bond/trust with, and generally enjoy being around. I am lucky enough to have a freaking fantastic group of friends that I wouldn't give up for the world! Some are closer than others of course, but all of my friends play a significant role in my life and I know for a fact that it would not be the same if I had never met them. I mean, who else could I go hang out with late at night and have a crazy good time with?
Also, don't let a distance (no matter how far or short it may be) detract from a friendship. Sure dating may not always work long distance, but you can have friends from around the globe if you wanted to! I mean, I keep in contact with quite a few people from different parts of Alaska, Washington, North Carolina, and Germany. It doesn't take too much to keep a friendship. All it requires is some talking and some sort of distance activity (my personal favorite is video games :D).
But back to the initial topic of classifications. I see people in 6 ways essentially. Best friends, close friends, friends, acquaintances, strangers, and enemies. My best friends are those I talk to and see every day and love hanging out with and play the largest role in my life. Close friends are those who I still have a large amount of trust with and still enjoy hanging out with, but they don't have quite the same relationship with me that my best friends do. Friends are comprised of those people in my life that I'm friendly with and see every so often, stay in contact with, but I may not hang out with them so much. Acquaintances are those who I know personally, but don't have that level of trust with or hang out with them. Strangers are strangers (does that need clarification?). Enemies should also be able to describe itself, but I rarely have enemies in my life. I'd like to think I'm a rather happy-go-lucky kind of guy.
And none of these groupings are permanent. Sometimes unavoidable events occur in my life or in theirs and we become more distant. This would move them down in the "friend hierarchy." Sometimes I meet new people and I get to know them better and hang out with them more often. It is all related to the luck of the draw really. Plus on an emotional scale it sucks to lose friends and it is always a joy to met new friends, which is part of why I love college so much because more often then not I'm meeting new people and getting to know others better (and I'm a really social person so friends make me happy!).
So to my best friends here at UAF, know that you guys make my life so much more fun and interesting than I could have ever hoped it to be. You guys should know who you are :D
On a random note, if you get some time you should go listen to Deadmau5. I'm rather attached to the amount of awesome techno he produces. I've been listening to my personal favorites, "Ghosts n' Stuff" and "I Remember," on repeat for the past week basically.

In rememberance
I've spent some time reflecting on the past recently and just thinking about stuff in general. Its really kind of fun every once in a while. The past is full of all sorts of intellectual treasures, junk piles, and some of those memories you wish you didn't have sometimes. But really when you think of it, every point in your life has had some effect on your life. Whether its how you see people, how you go about your daily life, or how to deal with situations, you have been changed by every moment in your past.
Now being the person that I am, these thoughts have been very random to say the least. Heh, its kind of how I go about things: RANDOMLY. Random is far more enjoyable than predictability in my opinion. So anyways to prove my point, here is a small sampling of what has been traveling through my brain recently:
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I can totally still remember my first crush. Her name was Emily Corlette and that was waaaayyy back in the 4th grade. I lived in Williamsburg, Virginia at the time and she was super cute. I can still remember what she looked like too. She was taller than I was (yes back in the day I was a short little kid), blonde, and had braces. I don't remember too much else other than the fact that I gave her a huge stuffed dog on the last day of school and moved shortly thereafter.
Running long distances is a freaking fantastic way to not only get in shape, but to mellow a confused brain out. That "runner's high" is just what I need sometimes to just take a deep breath (or quite a few since it takes a while) and think about things as well as send those wonderful endorphins coursing through my brain. It is a magical feeling and I urge everyone to go and do it sometime. Plus its a much better alternative to just sitting around and being confused or frustrated. Put that energy to good use and fix it for yourself! I want to try and run at least 5k every other day to stay in shape and out of confusion.
Dry ice bombs (and by bomb I mean pressure expansion.... no real explosives involved) are a cheap way to hear a big bang and watch gallon jugs of water fly into the air. The materials to make a decent sized one will really only cost you about $2.50 or so which is pretty amazing considering how much fun you can have with them.
Likealittle is a hilarious website and I have yet to regret being one of the founding members of it. Anonymous flirting may seem kind of strange at first, but really once you get in to it, its a ton of fun and the possibilities are practically endless. Plus the amusement of watching what other people say and being able to comment on it makes it all the better! Plus if you are the one doing the flirting, they'll never know its you.... (Unless one of your friends happens to be Elika who can read your mind and analyze your writing. Then people might know it was you.)
I think I need more techno music in my days. The beat is strong, the electronic music is playing, and it keeps me in my own little world sometimes. The kind of world where all I have to focus on is the repetition of the music and keeping the beat strong. I love techno/electronica music.
Physics lives in the world of make believe... I refuse to make up data by conforming to significant figures and problems that have the disclaimers of "Assume there is no friction, no air resistance, the pulley and the string are massless, and every system is a closed system" are stupid. This will NEVER happen in real life.
The pen is superior to the pencil.
For anyone who hasn't yet: go take the Library Science competency test in the Testing Center. That class is a waste and the test is so freaking easy if you have ever found a book in the library before.
The three best movies I have seen lately are (in order from the best to the "still awesome but not the best"): Scott Pilgrim vs the World, Inception, Avatar.
My core friends group keeps life so much more interesting here at college. I'm glad they are there :) Now if only they all didn't live down in the other dorm (minus 1). It makes Moore a lonely place sometimes. But then I go bother people on my floor (yes that means you especially Kris. BOTHER).
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
All of that only scratches the surface of my thoughts, but alas, it is what it is.
C'est la vie.

The start of something new
So yesterday I flew back to school up in the frigid land of Fairbanks. This was the highlight of my month. Now not only do I get to see all my friends again and do social things, but I have returned to my little land of independence. I eat when I want, do what I want (although I still attend all of my classes), and just enjoy the freedoms of college life. Besides, this puts off having to exist in the working world for as long as possible!
Now some people may wonder why I started writing a blog. I have a strange suspicion that writing every once in a while about my thoughts will help my brain become a little more organized and a little less confuzzled. Plus a couple of my super-awesome friends write some excellent blogs and told me I should try it out (and you should go look at them here and here because they are awesome). My page even has a plant on it and I wish I could have a plant... Until then I have my little solar powered plant that dances in the sunlight and kind of acts like a real plant, just without the growing and care required to survive parts. I think I like the plant picture in the back because its bright and cheery and colorful.
Also, I am one of those crazy students here at UAF. Why do one major when you could do two? Related majors? Nobody does that! Well, maybe some people do but not me. I mean come on, Computer Science and Music are totally similar in the sense that nothing in my course load matches up EVER. But I guess that is the challenge at my feet.
I have accepted it and embrace the new adventures ahead.
